Update on Maryland cases as of May 13, 2020:
- 34,812 confirmed cases
- 6,404 hospitalized to date
- 1,694 confirmed deaths

- Informed by White House, NGA guidelines
- Draws upon AEI and Johns Hopkins’ recommendations
- Input from public health and business experts
Progress toward reopening
- Maryland has achieved the 14-day trend of plateauing and decreasing numbers of hospitalizations and deaths.
- As of 5 p.m. Friday:
- Retail stores in Maryland may reopen with up to 50% capacity
- Manufacturing may resume operations
- Personal services (barber shops and hair salons) may reopen at up to 50% capacity and by appointment only.
- Pet groomers, animal adoption shelters, car washes and art galleries will also be able to begin reopening.
- Churches and houses of worship may begin to safely hold religious services.
- Outside services are strongly encouraged, but inside services may be permitted at 50% capacity or less with appropriate safety protocols.
- Businesses are encouraged to take the “Maryland Strong: Back to Business Pledge” to assure customers that they are adhering to best practices and strict safety guidelines.
- All Marylanders, especially older and more vulnerable populations, are advised to continue staying home as much as possible.
- Employers should continue to encourage telework and everyone should continue wearing masks in indoor public areas, retail stores and on transit.
- Reopening is county-by-county:
- Prince George’s and Montgomery counties have indicated they are not ready to move into Stage One while others feel strongly that they are able to do so safely.
- Seven jurisdictions between the Washington, D.C., suburbs and the Baltimore region make up 87% of the coronavirus cases in the state.
- A big concern is the lack of testing to have a better idea of the spread of the virus in the community. Officials have been speaking daily about the need to coordinate their re-openings.
